about

Seems like this is the third song in a series, after "Working for the Man" (2020) and "Sick and Evil" (2022 - on the Tiny Malone album). I guess a more depressing song about the near future is POSSIBLE, but it won't be me writing it. Hey, it's loud, right? (P.S. please play it loud)
Also: We can vote this nonsense away.

lyrics

Some time and it isn’t that far off
I see us running from the freshly empowered underbelly of our kind
If it isn’t me they’ve assembled to destroy
In their combat regalia and tomato red caps
It’s me I hope they’ll find

That’s me in a street fight
That’s me standing apart from the utterly depraved
In their business suits
And their awful eyes

That’s you in a heartbeat
That’s you running away but there’s nowhere left to turn
The white sheets are gone
It’s a new disguise

And what is truth and what’s a lie
Has long been given up as entirely and hopelessly abstract
Once upon a time we believed in a free and independent press
But that’s when there was such a thing as fact

That’s me with a bullhorn
That’s me with a placard on my knees
In the pouring rain
And without a home

That’s you in a dead heat
That’s you with the brownshirts on your tail
Can you feel the pain
Now that you’re all alone?

Please don’t forget about
I’m still alive in this
I can’t hold on for much longer

Some time ago in a far off land
We talked of things like character and virtue
And were you so naive to think that truth would set us free
And duly elected men would never hurt you

That’s me in a cop car
Carted away, bloody smudges on the door
Worked a clever ploy
Like some Winston Smith

That’s you staying silent
So secure that our laws would see us through
Now you’re just a toy
That they’re done playing with

Please don’t forget about
I’m still alive in this
I can’t hold on for much longer
