Turn Me Over 03:54
It was just the sunshine Blazing down upon the crashing waves I'm just another man I'm like a cup of coffee I'm a broken record playing on I'm a cup of coffee Just a scratched up a vinyl But if you turned me over It was just the coughing wind The way the sunlight brushed across your face Now I'm the pouring rain I'm gonna keep on pounding I'm a broken record playing on Just a cup of coffee I'm your scratched up vinyl But if you turned me over You'd find I'm not like any other guy (chorus) So Turn me over Was I just a passing train But one you never noticed 'cause I came too fast You never even asked You only said I'm sorry I'm a broken record playing on Just a cup of coffee I'm your scratched up vinyl But if you turned me over It was just a passing thought I was just a shadow on your mind I'm never coming back I'll always be the same Just your cup of coffee brewing on I'm a broken record Just your scratched up vinyl But if you turned me over You'd find I'm not like any other guy (chorus) So turn me over

Yoko Song 03:30
If you pretend to be my Yoko And I pretend to be your John What do we do when this over When our catastrophe has come If you meant everything you said today Then I’ll believe it for a while What do we do when we are broken down? If I pretend to be your postman And you pretend to get the door What do I do when my pretender Doesn’t answer anymore What do I do when there is no one home And I’ve been standing all the while What do we do when we are broken down If I pretend to be your guru And you pretend to be my star What do we do if this arrangement Doesn’t get us very far If you said everything you came to say And still you haven’t made a sound What do we do when we are broken down If you pretend to be my agent And I pretend to watch the wheels What do we do when this engagement Soon becomes the way it feels What do we do when we have gone to town And they’ve been talking all around? What do we do when we are broken down If you pretend to be my Yoko And I pretend to be your John What do we do when this is over And our catastrophe has come If you meant everything you said today Then I’ll believe it for a while What do we do when we are broken down?

(chorus) Every message is erased Every photograph replaced Got to keep the record clean Scrub your memory from my machine Every alabi's been used, Every accident excused But now we louse it up again. I only wear this jacket Because it covers up my gait And you can have a small town panic We're in trouble but it's much too late I only have an hour But I suppose that's nothing new And you can feel amused and abused That I spend it running back to you (chorus) I ony have this feeling When I come bounding trhough your door And we can thow up chains and bolts And say we tried but couldn't stand it anymore And then we go on some hiatus And throw our feelings in a box But we can have a hard time poking fingers Smashing fists against the lock (chorus - new words) Every issue is confused Every arbiter recused Got to keep the docket clean Wash the fingerprints off our machine Every item's been reviewed All our penalties accrued But still we haven't paid the fee And is it that hard to explain We shut it down and start again And yet we never spread our wings and fly away We just wait for another day Fly fly away Wait for the day to be released Every message is erased Every photograph replaced Got to keep the record clean Scrub your memory from my machine Every alabi's been used Every accident excused but now we start it up again Oh oh oh, we start it up We start it up again

Everybody's going to sleep now Everybody's going to sleep The old gray moon The man with the tunes Everybody's going to sleep Everybody's going to sleep now Everybody's going to sleep The ice cream vendor The money lender The ballerina, the old bartender Everybody's going to sleep (chorus) So Close your eyes Don't you worry You'll grow older, Don't you hurry Let your little body drift away We'll greet you with a song and a smile at the break of day Everybody's going to sleep now Everybody's going to sleep The electrician, the young beautician The acrobat with blind ambition Everybody's growing Everybody's going to sleep Everybody's going to sleep now Everybody's going to sleep Three small boys in their pajamas Hearing tall tales of papa's and mama's Everybody's growing Everybody's going to sleep (chorus)

Bar Harbor 03:00
Did he lay you in his bed Gently cradling your head Did he tell you things you used to be told by me Did you have his coffee on your breath On your drive down from Bar Harbor? Bar Harbor Did you open to his charms When he locked you in his arms Was he everything you wanted me to be Did you honor love or welcome death On your trip up to Bar Harbor? Bar Harbor Did they cover you in lace As you had them take my place Did you tell them that you used to be loved by me Did you feel me sitting close at hand On your drive down from Bar Harbor

Target 03:06
Walked past your house again It doesn't make a difference The blinds are drawn The plants are staring at me vaguely from the sill You could be sitting in your parlor Sipping coffee with the milkman That's a bitter pill The feeling still remains, it hasn't died It's just an empty kind of thrill That has me clutch at my insides and wonder why We can't be happening as we happened once before And happening still (chorus) And everyone at Target drives a Honda And every stranger's face looks just like you And every poor man's imitation carry's home the blow That it's all over and there's nothing I can do And everyone at Target drives a Honda Scrolled through your Facebook page It didn't solve my problem That blue-eyed rocker boy was staring through his sideburns back at me You could be sitting in his kitchen Eating crackers from his cupboard Oh what a thing to see The days they just tick by they're all the same My only hope is we'll collide It's just my never ending game That has me planning run-ins, chance encounters all the while, Every time I step outside (chorus)

Close the blinds Turn out the light May you never see a sweeter sight Picture clouds Rolling by Feather pillows in the sky Think of all the ones we love Tonight Lay yourself Upon your bed May you never feel a finer thread Feel the weight of your cares As they vanish into air Feel your loved ones standing there Tonight Sleep well tonight And you can gather all your lit-tle animals and items dear to you and secret promises and hold them tight Oh Glimmer in your eye See what you want it all to be And it’ll be all right Don’t raise an eye And you can think of all the pretty princesses the proven princes and the perfect, praying people as they sigh Oh Trouble passing nigh Say where you wanted it to be And it’ll pass you by Sleep now the Whole night through Then pick yourself back up anew

Happy birthday to the woman I wronged I’ve made such a mess of it all So broken hearted pretty much all the time And feeling suburban These bottles of bourbon Don’t lie Don't rack 'em up And say goodnight Don't choose the darkness For the light Some things are worth the fight Happy birthday to the love of my life I’m feeling so lost for you now Since we parted I’m a mouse of a man And these feelings inflate All the hours we wait To decide Happy birthday to you my forsaken bride Don’t let the sun go down on us Without a kicking screaming fuss Or let the bitterness inside be your guide Happy birthday to the lover I knew It seems such a long time ago Since you’re gone I’m just a bumbling fool With ears to the ground How I long for the sound of your call Happy birthday to the woman I’ve wronged I’ve made such a mess of it all So broken hearted pretty much all the time And feeling suburban These bottles of bourbon can’t hide Happy birthday to you my forsaken bride

On the Peaks Island Ferry I reflected on the year I spent in exile As I watched the restless water smack the bow I thought of All the ways I hurt the ones I love I watched the ripples from above And felt the guiding arms of love Surround me Amazing that it found me standing there We've had every chance to reassess my crime And how I tried to make it right to you We've had ample time to talk But all the friends who you hold dear to you say no Make him pay, don't be his pet He'll only play around you Release the ties that bound you Let him be (Chorus) On the way To do what I think right and I'll come All the way home Bring it home to me Bring it home to me When the Peaks Island Ferry Next sets sail for Portland harbor in the morning I'll be riding in its cargo bay my rented wagon filled with all my things Burned by the year's unending stings Yet still prepared to fly away Without you It just can't be about you anymore I'm so sorry that I hurt you I'm so sad you felt we couldn't even talk again As the morning rays of sunshine ripple up And catch my eyes from off the bay I think of how you'll find your way I hope that anger doesn't find a way To stay inside you I hope that love will guide you once again (chorus)
10.
That old familiar song I sing it each year It never takes long It's all about the plans I have to change my habits Throw the ball I swear I'll grab it Resolution, resolution, resolution time That old familiar crack The balls going down I'll have an attack It's all about the mood I though I shook last time around I should have kept my promise Resolution, resolution, resolution time (chorus) So carry on the grand tradition Tack the paper to the wall Every New Year's resolution Does no good at all So tear the paper down and watch it fall That old familiar lark It's that time of night With Mr. Dick Clark They're gathered in the streets with Roman candles I don't see how anybody handles Resolution, resolution, resolution time (chorus) Should old acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind Remember what you promised to yourself And raise a mug up to your lips To ward off thoughts unkind Swallow to protect your mental health That old familiar game I play it each year It comes out the same It's all about the plans I have to change my habits Throw the ball I swear I'll grab it Resolution, resolution, resolution time (chorus)

about

This album was recorded from May to August 2014 at the University of Southern Maine, with the exception of drum tracks for tracks 1, 3, 5 and 10, which were recorded at the Chapman House Barn in Portland, ME in July, 2013, and the whole of track 8, which was recorded at the University of Southern Maine in November, 2013. Hammond organ and Moog synth were recorded by Steve Drown at The Studio in Portland, Maine, during the summer of 2014.

With the exception of track 8, Dan Sonenberg plays all instruments and sings all backing vocals (on track 8, Jimmy Dority plays bass, Roy MacNeil plays viola, and Shannon Allen plays cello).

The bulk of recording was done in the immediate aftermath of the world premiere of The Summer King, Dan Sonenberg's full length opera on the life of Negro League baseball player Josh Gibson, which took place at Portland's Merrill Auditorium in May 2014.

First person note:
This is a collection of intensely personal songs, documenting a turbulent period in my life. It is not without some trepidation that I cast them out into the world, as for a good while I felt the inclination to hold them close to the vest.

During the 2013-14 academic year, I lived in a seasonal rental on Peaks Island, three miles off the coast of Portland, Maine, in a kind of exile from the world as I worked feverishly orchestrating my opera. When the opera was completed, I conceived of this album as a logical followup, and it became the project of my summer. Because money was tight, I did all the recording myself at the University of Southern Maine's digital music studio (even work study students are off for the summer!), venturing elsewhere only to record Moog synth and Hammond organ, which I didn't have on hand.

In the final stages of mixing I brought in Steve Drown, with whom I have worked on several projects, to correct my rookie mistakes and add a little zing to the work. We worked together for 15 hours, after which I made a few additional tweaks, and then sent the bundle off to Scott Crags for mastering.

In many ways this album was a long time coming. The oldest song, Resolution Time, was written in 2007, and the most recent, the title track, in 2014. Most of the songs were written over the last four years though. In a more cosmic sense, however, I have been preparing for this project for a lifetime - as I considered myself a singer-songwriter long before a "composer," and I never imagined my "debut" solo album would materialize so relatively late in my life. I hope you enjoy it.
